The Mystery of the Incredible Shrinking Pacific Halibut

By Robert Deen

It’s a troubling mystery. Why are Pacific Halibut getting so much smaller?

Halibut weigh about a third of what they did 30 years ago, scientists say. In Alaska’s major port areas, including Homer, Seward, Kodiak, Ninilchik and Whittier, the average size of an 18-year-old female halibut has declined from more than 80 pounds in 1997 to about 40 pounds last year. Halibut fishing off Neah Bay

Halibut fishing off Neah Bay, La Push to close May 21, will re-open May 23

Halibut fishing off Neah Bay will be closed May 21 off the state’s north coast but will re-open for a final day of fishing on May 23. Anglers are expected to reach the 108,030-pound halibut quota in marine areas 3 (La Push) and 4 (Neah Bay) after one more day of fishing according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Those marine areas had been scheduled to be open for halibut fishing Thursday, when the weather is forecast to be marginal. Department staff consulted with sport fishing representatives and agreed to hold the final day of halibut fishing off Neah Bay on Saturday. This is incredibly short notice but Fish and Wildlife wanted to give anglers a good chance to catch a halibut Saturday despite the early closure.

In all marine areas open to halibut fishing, there is a one-fish daily catch limit and no minimum size restriction. Anglers may possess a maximum of two fish in any form and must record their catch on a WDFW catch record card.

The North Pacific Fisheries Management Council’s met pushback against Tuesday, March 31st against stricter halibut bycatch regulations in Alaska’s groundfish fishery, say industry sources. The opposition came in the form of a 23,000 word petition, delivered to governor Jay Inslee by Washington company Fishermen’s Finest. The company, which operates a large fleet in Alaska, argues that the revisions will cost millions in revenue and thousands of jobs. If they hold up, the limits could trim allowable bycatch by 10% to 50%.
