Searching for Gold in Lake Erie: The Wild Goldfish of the Midwest

Lake Erie commercial fishermen can tell you all about the hidden gold in their area.  This large lake that borders Ontario, Canada, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York State to Niagara Falls has a healthy population of fish. You would only expect to find these fish as prizes at the county fair.  Observant anglers will notice that goldfish are a carp species.  In Lake Erie they’ve multiplied to a healthy population, which, if you know other carp, shouldn’t come as a shock.  What is surprising is that they’ve become one of the most lucrative species for area fishermen. The fish are now popular enough that demand is outweighing supply.  Now, some communities are looking into creating goldfish farms in the more remote coves of the lake.
